some stuff about me
um, ok. since you asked me about myself...
i'm a freelance web designer. i used to work full time, but i felt the pinch of the dot.bomb fallout that's been all too common. i wonder if anyone's got a real, stable, full-time job these days in this industry.
i've been living in little rock, arkansas since june of this year. wait, you're saying, you moved from nyc to *where*? and yes, i did it on purpose. i lived in new york for eight years, and it's true, the city does start to get to you after awhile. i never thought it would happen to me, but i just needed some quiet time. and the south is great. much more mellow, and the people are just nice. it weirded me out at first, people being nice for no good reason (you can take the girl out of new york...), but i'm totally used to it now. will i stay here permantently? not a chance. i plan to do the same thing i did in nyc, and stay until i'm done here. that's the great part about doing what i do: no need to ever commit to one location. ain't technology grand?
in my copious amounts of free time, i paint, take pictures and write. i hestitate to call myself an artist, because a) i mostly do creative-type stuff for fun, and b) i really hate that word and all of the stigmas attached to it. i do web work to pay the bills (so if you need any contract work done, feel free to contact me). you can find me on aol instant messenger, where i go by the user name of rayven0913, on icq at 124765837, or on irc at irc.chat-solutions.org in #evanchan. if you're not the chatting type, you can send me a good old-fashioned email.
on the weekends, you can usually find me in one of the two bars i hang out at here in town. on sundays, i try to do fun stuff that involves being outside, because arkansas is the natural state and all, and there's some amazing places to go here--lakes and mountains and such. i'm trying to start running again, and biking. i used to play hockey at chelsea piers in the city, but the likelihood of finding a hockey team in the south isn't very high.
i like to travel, and one of the most influential experiences in my life was the semester i spent in st. petersburg, russia in the fall of 1996 at st. petersburg state technical university. this was the dorm i lived in. my degree's in history and russian studies, even though i do "web stuff." my concentration was in stalinist politics during world war two. visiting moscow and being at places like the lubyanka and red square, seeing where great episodes in history actually took place, standing on the same ground where world leaders who shaped political climates as we know them stood, was a huge deal to me. but maybe i'm just a geek about stuff like that...
what else do you need to know? this site was designed and coded on a mac, because i refuse to touch pee-cees (you never know where they've been...). the greatest movie of all time is clerks. the mets are the better ny baseball team, but the only sport worth watching is hockey, and for that it's red wings all the way. crime and punishment is the best book ever written. the record industries should leave napster alone. and my favorite color is blue... no, yellooooow....
